Cover Reveal ~ Sweet Light by Alexia Halliwell

Title of book: Sweet Light
Series: The Hazelwood Series (#1)
Author: Alexia Halliwell
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 26th

Hostile.

That was one word that summed up Lira Matthews in Kane’s honest-to-god opinion. Actually, calling her hostile was putting it lightly.

Belligerent. Vicious. Scathing. All wonderful words that could be used to describe Lira.

Never in his entire life had he met a woman like her. From the very moment she stepped into the small town of Hazelwood she intrigued him. It could have been her guarded, distrusting eyes or her sweet softness hidden underneath her tough façade — all Kane knew was he wanted her.

To Lira, a Dean’s list medical student, Kane was just another hot mechanic. Sure, he had corded arms that made you gulp in desire and a kindness to him that made your insides melt, but they were from two different worlds. Two worlds that were never meant to meet — they both knew that.

That was until Lira’s past catches up with her and she must decide whether she can face her fears or let it consume her whole.

Excerpt 1:

“I feel like swimming,” she slurred.
“Sorry sweetheart. With six drinks under your belt — don’t get me wrong, I’m impressed that you’ve been able to hold your own this long — swimming isn’t happening.”
Lira glared at me, “Don’t tell me how to live my life.”
I rolled my eyes. She was going to try going swimming just to spite me, wasn’t she?
“I don’t need you Kane,” she sniffed haughtily. “I’m going to ask those nice men over there if they can give me a ride to the lake.”
Slipping out of her chair, she stumbled and walked over to a group of men sitting at the table, watching the rugby. I watched as she grinned and introduced herself, using her full name.
Grinning, I watched her ask the guy in the middle if she could ‘pretty please’ borrow his truck. When he chuckled and refused, she resorted to complimenting his leather cut and how the AC/DC shirt he had on really brought out his eyes. When that didn’t work, she pulled over a chair and sat, arguing loudly the pros and cans of letting her borrow his truck.
I laughed as I listened to her, “So I understand your hesitation to let me borrow your truck due to my intoxicated state. Gentlemen, I understand. But what I’m offering is free services.”
My eyebrows rose. She was prostituting herself for a ride?
“You guys look like you get into your fair share of fistfights.”
No shit. They were members of a motorcycle club a town over and my long-term customers.
“I can suture, bandage any cuts you receive. I’m the best goddamn suture person in the whole country.”
When that didn’t work, Lira switched tactics, “Listen that’s not all I can do. I can do pap smears.” The guys winced in disgust. “Your ladies won’t have to worry about a thing. I’ll do their pap smears free of charge if you let me borrow your truck. All I fucking want is to go swimming.”

Excerpt 2:

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a black truck zoom past me and suddenly brake a few metres ahead. It shifted its gears into reverse and sidled up beside me. The driver’s door thrust open and Kane jumped out in all his glory, rounding the hood of the vehicle and walking towards me.

Of course he was here.

His cropped, dark hair was quickly becoming drenched. Drops of rainwater ran down from his hair over the hard ridges of his face and disappeared into the front of his shirt. I tore my gaze from the expanse of his solid chest and lifted my head to meet his eyes. His sharp green eyes skimmed over my face and ran over my drenched body.

“Lira, what are you doing in the rain?” Kane snapped, shaking out of his leather-lined jacket and pushing my arms into it. This jacket was different to the leather one he was wearing last night. The softest wool I had ever felt lined the inside, instantly warming my chilled bones. The cuff came past where my arm ended, the heavy jacket ending just above my knees, but it was perfect. I buried my face into the collar, breathing in the heady scent of Kane; warm soap and the slightest whiff of tobacco. My eyes flickering shut, I let myself take in Kane’s smell. I could get drunk on this stuff.

There's a cardinal rule in football that you never break. You don't mess around with another player's girl and you don't touch the coach's daughter. Well, I've never been good at following the rules. Belinda Carmichael is uptight, prissy and the hottest girl I've ever seen. She's also the head coach's precious baby girl. And she's entirely off limits. The trouble is, I didn't know who she was when I met her. And she had no idea I was her daddy's newest star player. It was her job to show me around campus, and I showed her a lot more than that. But we fumbled the ball – she never told a soul who got her pregnant. Not even me, the baby daddy. As the quarterback I'm not supposed to date the coach's daughter. I'm definitely not supposed to knock her up. Well, too bad. I don't just want to date her. I don't just want her in my bed. I want to score the ultimate, game-winning touchdown. Her heart. *Go Long has a guaranteed HEA and no cheating! This edition contains bonus materials at the back for a limited time only *

"How do you like our campus so far Kyle?" Kyle smiled benignly at my mother. He looked as innocent as a choirboy. Meanwhile, under the table his foot was brushing mine. I wasn't sure if it was deliberate until he did it again. I scowled at him as he oozed charm and good will. All false of course. I wasn't fooled. "It's the most beautiful I've ever seen. And the students have been... very friendly." He grinned at me pointedly and popped a bite of food into his mouth. He made it clear he was talking about me as his foot caressed mine again. I kicked him and he nearly choked. I smiled serenely as my father pounded his back. Kyle glared at me as he wiped his mouth. I gave him a look that clearly said 'two can play at that game.' "Thank you, Coach." "Make sure you chew your food, boy. Can't lose you before the season starts!" I put my chin on my hand and smiled sweetly. I knew more about sports than most men. But Kyle didn't know that. I intended to milk it. "Daddy, isn't it unusual to put a walk-on on the team?" "Hardly ever happens. But Kyle here is an unusual young man." "He is?" "He's unnaturally talented on the field Bellie. His military training had a lot to do with it, but some people are just naturals." "Bellie?" Kyle's eyes were glowing mischievously. I could have screamed. My plan to control the conversation had completely backfired. If he started calling me 'Bellie' I would lose it. I really would. "That's what we call our little girl. Did you know they actually pay her to attend school? She had a full ride of course, but they actually give her a stipend and all sorts of administrative jobs for extra money. She has career academic written all over her." I groaned inwardly. Did he have to make me sound like a 12 year-old or a grandma? That's what I was really. Kyle was right when he called me Miss Priss. Just a little girl who acted like the biggest, most responsible, boring goodie two shoes ever to walk the face of the- Kyle was staring at my breasts. Not just staring either. He licked his lips and made an appreciative grimace. Like he couldn't stand being this close to me and not touching me. I coughed, nearly spitting out my mashed potatoes. He was touching me with his eyes. It was practically foreplay! I tried to ignore him but it was too late. A hot pool of lust had settled in my belly. I crossed my arms, realizing my nipples were hard. I jumped up, knocking over my glass of iced tea. Thankfully it was almost empty. "Bellie! Are you alright?" "Just- chilly. I want to grab a sweater." "Alright but come right back and we can clear the table." "Yes, mom." I practically ran from the room. I could feel Kyle's eyes boring into my back. I heard him ask where the restroom was and excuse himself. Argh!!! He was following me! I ran for my bedroom and started to slam the door but he caught it with the palm of his hand. "Where are you running to... Bellie?" He was grinning at me like the cat who ate the canary. I had the sudden urge to smack the smug look off his handsome face. His eyes slid over my body, even more blatantly than before. I grabbed a light cardigan, angrily pulling it over my arms. I buttoned the center of it. "Don't call me that!" He just shook his head, leaning against my doorframe. "Why not? You know I can still see those perfect tits of your, Bellie. Your nipples are practically poking a hole through that sweater." I gasped. "My father will hear you!" He grinned. "No. He won't." He stepped into my room and I stepped backwards until my back was against the wall. He loomed over me, saying nothing. Then he ran his hands over my shoulders, deliberately brushing my breasts with his forearms. "Did I do that to you, Miss Priss?" I opened my mouth but no words came out. He was making me confused dammit! And he had done this to me... without even touching me, I was aroused like never before. Well, like only once before anyway. "Meet me tomorrow after practice at my dorm. Unless you want me to tell your father you've been breaking all his precious rules." I glared at him. "Blackmail? Really?" He nodded slowly. "I will stoop to anything to get what I want, Bellie. What we both want." I inhaled sharply as he leaned forward, his lips brushing my ear. I closed my eyes, feeling my heart thud in my chest. My whole body felt alive. I could feel the heat rolling off him. The strength. I could smell that clean manly scent... images of our night together flooded my mind against my will. I whimpered, ready to fall into his arms. All he had to do was kiss me. But he didn't. He just breathed four soft words against my ear, sending shivers down my spine. At that moment, even my goosebumps had goosebumps. "And I want you." When I opened my eyes, he was gone.

Connor leaned against the window frame with his arms crossed as he watched the waves crashing against the rocks. In front of him, as wide as the horizon, was the ocean. With the clouds drifting in from the sea, the sky had turned grey and dark, and he knew there’d be even more rain coming later in the day. He would’ve enjoyed the scene if it hadn’t reminded him of his changing life. He’d been back in Fermosa Bay for two days already, but the memories of the first seven years of his life he’d spent in this small Australian coastal town were tucked away in the back of his mind. Seemingly inaccessible. Nowadays, his life was in London and had been for the last twenty-three years. He took a couple of deep breaths as he looked towards the harbour in the distance, and the small town in the alcove with the hilly forest in the background where he’d spend the first seven years of his life. It was truly one very picturesque little place. A noise from the other end of the house hauled him back from his thoughts, and he stepped away from the window. Over the last few weeks, since he’d decided to accept Jack’s invitation to Australia, he’d had visions of what he’d find here. His mother hadn’t told him much about the time she’d lived here, except about Jack owning a pub. Connor had been furious for her lack of memory, but in the end admitted to himself it’d probably not been a time she’d like to remember.   So he was surprised to find out that Jack lived in this massive house just outside Fermosa Bay, on the top of the cliffs, with a view over the ocean. The house had five rooms and a small study at the back. The lounge room, with a high pitched ceiling, had wood fire heating and a big window front. Connor had loved the house the instant he’d stepped into it. When he entered the hall, he saw his father and said, “Good morning, Jack.” The old man sighed sadly. “You still can’t bring it over your heart to call me Dad?” Connor’s gaze wandered from his father to all the many framed photos along the wall. Jack was in many of the photos, but most them had people in them he didn’t know, except the biggest one, which showed Connor as a child in Jack’s arms. A wave of sadness shook him. No, it wasn’t in him to call him Dad. Or to even think of him as his dad. After a moment’s silence, he turned to his father and shook his head. “Sorry.” Jack coughed, and Connor quickly rushed to his side, holding him upright. “Another bad day?” Connor asked. “Son, there will be no more good days. One day is like the other, until it will be the last.” The words struck Connor deep enough to feel some emotions for his father. He knew time was running out, but hearing it made it sound final. “There’s a front coming, but I think you’d be able to sit outside for a little while. At least until the nurse comes.” Jack simply nodded. Connor helped his father out onto the deck where the old man sat down on his swing seat. “Thanks, Son.” Without a reply, Connor stepped away and watched the sea again. “I couldn’t keep you away from the water when you were a child,” Jack said. “What do you mean?” Connor asked. Jack didn’t answer, so he turned around to look at his father. The old man stared into the distance, a withdrawn expression on his face. “You were constantly in the water. Whatever opportunity you had, you grabbed your little board and spent most of the day there.” “So what happened?” His father shrugged. “You left with your mother.” Sitting down on the chair next to Jack, Connor let out a long breath. “Something must’ve happened. I never go near water, let alone go in it.” Still gazing into the distance, Jack said, “I still have the blue board. Ethan’s little son sometimes uses it nowadays.” Not sure where the conversation was heading, Connor just went along. “Who’s Ethan?” he asked. The reaction from his father wasn’t what he expected. With his shoulders sagged, Jack closed his eyes. He looked so old and frail. From what Connor saw in all the photos around the house, cancer had taken a lot of life out of his father, leaving behind a haggard body with no energy left. Initially, he’d been taken aback by their similarities in looks, with their dark brown eyes and dark blond hair, including the stubborn curl above the ears, but after all, Jack was his father.

Rising Storm - Header banner

Welcome to Storm, Texas, where passion runs hot, desire runs deep, and secrets have the power to destroy…

Nestled among rolling hills and painted with vibrant wildflowers, the bucolic town of Storm, Texas, seems like nothing short of perfection.

But there are secrets beneath the facade. Dark secrets. Powerful secrets. The kind that can destroy lives and tear families apart. The kind that can cut through a town like a tempest, leaving jealousy and destruction in its wake, along with shattered hopes and broken dreams. All it takes is one little thing to shatter that polish.

Reading like an on-going drama in the tradition of classic day and night-time soap operas like Dallas, Dynasty, and All My Children, Rising Storm is full of scandal, deceit, romance, passion, and secrets.

With 1001 Dark Nights as the “producer,” Julie Kenner and Dee Davis use a television model with each week building on the last to create a storyline that fulfills the promise of a drama-filled soap opera. Joining Kenner and Davis in the “writer’s room” for the Midseason Episodes of this serial opera are bestselling authors Lexi Blake and Larissa Ione who have brought their vision of Storm to life.

So get ready. The storm is coming.

Check out this fantastic excerpt from DISTANT THUNDER!

It had only been three days since the Great Founders’ Day Disaster, but it felt like a month. For the first twenty-four hours after Dakota’s revelation, the town had been mostly shell-shocked. Then the story started spreading through social media, and last night after Marcus dropped Brittany off after dinner at Murphy’s, she discovered that someone posted the Founders’ Day Disaster on YouTube. The media had descended on Storm like locusts this morning, and her father, whom she’d only seen in passing since Founders’ Day, had adopted a shelter-in-place stance. Brittany had given him suggestions on where he could shelter in places that were much, much hotter than Texas, and then she’d run out the front door toward her car, only to be swarmed by reporters. “Ms. Rush, is it true that your best friend is pregnant with your father’s baby?” “Ms. Rush, how do you think this scandal will affect your father’s reelection campaign?” “Ms. Rush, did you know about the affairs your father was having with your friends?” Ugh. She and her mother shouldn’t have left Francine’s cabin so soon, and Jeffry certainly should have remained with one of his buddies. But when Marylee snapped her fingers and went into crisis mode, everyone came running and fell in line like good little minions. “This blows,” Jeffry said, looking up from where he was lounging on the couch with his iPad. “What blows?” She sank onto the love seat across from her brother. “The game you’re playing? Or the fact that we’re trapped like animals? Or maybe the fact that our father is a lying, cheating bastard who slept with our friends? Or the fact that my best friend is going to give birth to our little brother or sister?” Yep, she might be a little bitter. And it was ex-best friend. He tucked his feet under him on the couch and sighed. “Yeah.” “I can’t believe Mom thinks we need to be here for him—” She broke off as their mother, Payton, came around the corner with a tray of finger sandwiches and a pitcher of lemonade. They hadn’t spoken much about any of this, and Brittany wasn’t sure how to go about it. As far as she could tell, her mother hadn’t so much as shed a tear over the fact that her husband had knocked up a girl young enough to be his daughter and had probably slept with a dozen more. “I brought you something to eat,” Payton said, and if she’d heard Brittany talking, she was choosing to ignore it. “Your father and grandmother are finished with their meeting with Mr. Stayton, and they’re on their way up to talk to you.” “This should be good.” Jeffry reached for a sandwich as their mother put them on the coffee table. “I was wondering how long it would be before we got the circle-the-wagons lecture. Five bucks says he tries to convince us that everything Dakota said was a lie.” “I know you two are angry and confused and you have a lot of questions,” Payton said as she took a seat next to Brittany, looking all prim and proper in a subdued green dress and gray scarf. “But we’ll get through this. I promise.”
